41) Tuesday, Nov: 6, 2007 Lassen County Times, Westwood PinePress Cougars basketball ready for upcoming season Ben Wilgus Sports Writer Bwilg Lassen College men's bas- ketba]] team had almost a complete makeover from last year, returning only two play- ers, Golden Valley All- Conference player Jordan Stokes and Dominick Hill, a 6-foot-5-inch guard/forward who was an All-Conference defensive player last season. The Cougars will bring in nine new players including two sophomore transfers, Patrick Carlson and Josh Buck. Bush comes to Susa iville from Umpqua College in Roseburg, Ore. and Carlson is transferring from GVC rival Butte. "Buck is a tall inside-pres- ence for us. He can rebound and is very skilled around the basket," Riley said. "Patrick can shoot the heck out of the ball. He knows how to score and rebound. He is a good athlete," Riley said. This year*s team will be able to score, but will have to work hard on defense to win games. "We have to guard people and not let them get more than one shot," Riley said. Lassen has 11 players who know how to score, which will be the"strength of the team. This year the GVC will have multiple players taller than Lassen's Buck, who is 6- foot-8-inches tall. "We are going to have to learn how tb guard people who are taller than us," Riley said. The Cougars will be a run- ning team and will be looking to pressure the ball defensive- ly. Lassen's wing players will .have major roles this year. "We have a good group of kids this year," Riley said. Joining the team this year are point guard, Brandon Thompson, a 6-foot point guard from McQueen High School in Reno, Nev. Thompson is going to be looked upon to be a top defender, and direct the team and score off the dribble. Chris Carlson, brother of Patrick Carlson is a 6-foot-5- inch freshman guard from Damonte Ranch who can shoot the ball well, can score from anywhere and can rebound. Dominick Hill will be looked on to be the top defender on the Cougars. He is very athletic and can get to the basket. Jeremy Yazzie ~s an All- State player from Klamath Falls Ore. and is an extreme- ly good shooter. He recently had his appendix out and is getting back to full strength but will be able to use his size to score once he is healthy. Brendan Carlson is a 6-foot- 2-inch guard from Minden, Nev. and is the cousin of Patrick and Chris Carlson. He is an extremely hard worker, and very competitive. Mike Vincent is a 6-foot-5- inch forward from Dayton, Nev. and will mainly be an inside player. He is a hard worker, who can rebound and brings intensity to the team. Trent Johnson is a 6-foot-7- inch shooter who-can also post up. Riley says Johnson's will be able to shoot the three- point shot and post-up as well. Darius Stewart is an all- around player who can play guard and forward with his 6- foot-6-irlch body. He is a good passer and can handle the ball and play in the post.
