Lassen County Times, Westwood PinePress Tuesdayl Oct. 30, 2007 3D Lassen Youth Soccer host- ed the District IX Cup Championships on Saturday, Oct. 20 and Sunday, Oct. 21 at Ranch Park for the Under 14 girl's age group. Teams from all over Northeastern California, which included, Anderson, Weaverville, North Siskiyou, Redding, Coming, Pale Cedro, Shasta Lake and two teams from Lassen County came to vie for the Cup Champions. There were 20 games in all. Both the Cherry Colas and Team Zumpano each ended up with one loss in their appropriate fligilt and will play in the championship tournament in Redding on Saturday, Nov. 10. Players for the Cherry Colas, coached by Emma Lopez and Carrie Lee, spon- sored by Susanville Dental Care are: Kendra Bowles, Mikala Zinko, Shelby Junette, Laurel Lee, Claudia Lopez, Portia Martin, Destiny Mingo, Kayla Neely, Amanda Morgan, Auttumn Norton, Laura Phillips, Madelaine Raschein and Jacqualyn Smith. Players for Team Zumpano, coached by Vincent Zumpano and Robert Porfiri, sponsored by Valley Ag & Tractor, are: Alyssa Armoskus, Leah Cordoba-Moore, Jenna Fluke, Kirsten GUnderson, Claire Helpingstine, Heather Ingrain, Greta Porfiri, Anne Starcevich, Autumndae Taylor, Bailey Teague, Casandra Turner, Danielle Wood, McKenzie Wynters and Maygen Zumpano. Also playing in the Under 12 Girls Cup representing Lassen, held in Red Bluff was Team Da Bombs, coached by David Del Carlo' and sponsored by Susanville Orthodontic Care. U-14 boys Lassen U-14 boy's soccer team, the Lassen Thunder fell to Siskiyous 2-1 on Saturday, Oct. 6. David Del Simone scored Lassen's only goal. Jason Millar played great mid-field and Alec Carver was all over the field with long kicks. Chris Castaneda had a few shots at goal and Chris Wentz led on defense. Colby Sharp played his last game as goalie for the Thunder and did a great job. Austin Norgaard played aggressive and Jarred Joseph played good in the mid-field. On Saturday, Oct. 13, Lassen Thunder tied the Redding Red Bulls 2-2. Del Simone added two more goals for the Thunder with assists from Millar and Travis Hill. Jeffrey Paul played out- standing defense for the Thunder in the tie. On Monday, Oct. 15, Lassen Thunder and Lassen Weaver tied at 4. Del Simone added two more goals along with Millar and Castaneda. Paul and Joseph were all over the field hustling for the Thunder and Alec Carver, Wentz, Tejun Jiminez, Norgaard, William Lee, Hill urn and Urquizu all played well. Lassen Thunder played in the District Cup in Anderson on Saturday, Oct. 2O and Sunday, Oct. 21. In their first game, the Thunder defeated North Siskiyous 3-1. Lassen got great work from their defense, midfield and forwards, but even bet- ter from goalie Uruizu. Lassen shared the ball so that Del Simone, Lee and Castaneda could score. Millar, Joseph, Norgaard played at midfield, Jiminez, Hill, and Paul played well and Carver did a great job. The second game had Lassen fall to the Coming Jaguars 6-2. Lassen Thunder played them tough, and Del Simone and Carver each got goals. Castaneda said, "Sometimes you are going to meet teams that can beat you but learn something from that. It makes you better." With only 11 players, Lassen was unable to sub, but all players worked hard. Lassen's final game was a 1-0 loss to the Anderson Gold. The Thunder played hard, but came short from a win. Due to a goal differential, Lassen was able to move on to the semi-finals in the District Cup. The Last four teams are the Coming Monarcas, Corning Jaguars, Trinity Brazil and the Thunder. The Thunder played in another tournament on Saturday, Oct. 27 and Sunday, Oct. 28 but results were not available at press time.
