12A Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007 Lassen County Times Lassen High Alumni Association honors 1965 graduate The Lassen High Alumni Association has named Terry Wood "Alumni of the Year." The association made the announcement at the organi- zation's annual picnic, and it was very well received by the large crowd in attendance. Wood was recently honored during the Lassen County Fair Parade and at the Lassen High School Homecoming Assembly. Wood was born in Susanville and attended the local grammar schools, where he showed himself to be an outstanding student. While at Lassen High School, he served as the sports editor for "The Grizzly" newspaper for two years. Wood graduated high school in 1965 and was the recipient of the Lassen College Lysle Trabert Journalism Scholarship. His love of sports and writ- ing continued at Lassen College where he became the sports editor of "The Cougar" newspaper. After graduation in 1967, he attended Fresno State University where he received his bachelor's degree in 1969. Upon returning to Susanville, he was hired as the director of music, news and sports for KSUE, the local radio station. Four years later, he became the sports editor for the Lassen Advocate, the then local news- paper. Wood stayed at the newspa- per for 13 years, leaving just a few months before the paper closed in 1987. Wood then went to work for the Department of Corrections, retiring four years ago. Wood's selection as alumni of the year is based on his 38 years of selfless dedication to the sports programs and the youth of Lassen County. He has announced baseball games at the college ,for 35 years and has kept stats and announced for the basketball, softball and volleyball pro- grams at the college, as well. Wood also has called games and kept stats for baseball, softball, volleyball and bas- ketbaU for many years at the high school. He is currently mentoring and tutoring students in the college journalism class, as well as writing for the college newspaper. Wood has served as college president for four years, coached for a couple years, and announced games for Babe Ruth. For 23 years, Wood was very active in the Sierra Bobby Sox program. He attended count- less games and never missed an All-Star tournament, including nationals in Los Angeles, and reported all stats. Wood touched the lives of thousands of young people, by the use of his voice on the EA. system, as he called out their names, by putting their names in print, and simply by his presence at countless sporting events.
