Egelhofer graduates with biology degree Thea Egelhofer graduated from the Universi- ty of California Santa Cruz on June 11, with a bachelor's degree in molecular, cellular and de- velopmental biology. UC-Santa Cruz is comprised of eight different colleges, patterned after Oxford University in England. At UCSC, Egelhofer earned Crown College Honors as well as honors in her major. In addition, the Biology Department awarded Egelhofer honors on her senior thesis. Her re- search results will be published in a scientific journal in the coming year. Egelhofer attended local schools m Lassen County, graduating from Lassd High School as co-valedictorian in 1996. She benefited from nu- merous local scholarships: Lassen Community Hospital Auxiliary, Monticola Club, Lassen Mu- sic Boosters, Lassen Union Secondary Teachers Association, and Dr. Jay and Mary Gibson Memorial Scholarship. She also received aca- demic scholarships from UCSC. Thea is the daughter of Kathy Gies and Richard Egelhofer, of Janesville. She plans to attend graduate school after working for a year in the San Diego area. This summer, she will be in Costa Rica studying Spanish. Fire protection The Westwood Fire Depart- ment Prevention Program is in the process of writing this year's abatement notices. This program is designed to reduce the risk of fire by elimi- nating unnecessary fire fuel, such as weeds, combustible materials, household rubbish and debris adjacent to struc- tures. Last year more than 100 notices were written with 90- percent compliance. program started" During this year's inspec- tion the fire department recog- nized that the majority of renters and home owners have not yet cleared their alley of weeds and or debris. In an at- tempt to avoid unnecessary ac- tion, we are asking that each resident remove debris. The program has made progress in regard to the re- duction of rubbish, debris and abandoned vehicles.
