; Tuesday, July 11, 2000 AUtO B00ing Lassen Courtly Times/Westwood Secret to winning is just staying out there BySam Wl Staff Writer Charles Darwin called it survival of the fittest. But local veteran enduro driver Kim Taylor calls it simply a matter of survival. Taylor took fourth place in the July 4 endurance race at High Desert Speedway. Ironically, she turned 139 laps at the June enduro and wound up in first place. On Independence Day, she ran 162 laps, but that was only good enough for only a fourth-place finish on the quicker-than-usual but still slick quarter-mile oval at High Desert Speedway. "You just try to keep going," Taylor said. 'qhen I won in June, I never stopped, and I never had a problem. But the track was a lot faster this time, and I had a stalling problem. My car just kept dying on me. You're out there for two hours, and there's no rules really, except that you can't hit the driver's door on pur- pose." Taylor said she enjoys the excitement of getting out on the track. "I like it a lot. It's exciting just to get out there. Sometimes I'm a little ner- vous at the start, but I'm OK once I get going." Taylor's not the only mem- ber of her family who straps on a helmet and hits the dirt track. Her father, John Hay, and her brother, John Hay, all drive cars for the Never Sweat Racing team. And her husband, Galen, rides shot- gun and helps Taylor find her way through the corners during the enduros. Her brother didn't enter (but stayed in the pits to serve as mechanic), and earlier on her dad busted a ball joint on one of the high-banked turns, which put him out of the running. But Taylor said the team swept a 1998 enduro when her dad took first, she took second, and her brother took third. Taylor pilots a 1973 Chrysler Imperial, a big car her dad put her in because, "it keeps me safe." She said her dad paid, "maybe $100, if that" for the car. Taylor said she's run 10 enduros in the past five years, and ventured into one powder puff race. Taylor's car proudly dis- plays the scars of dirt track racing. In fact, most of the enduro cars seem pretty well bent. One car even sported a shark's fin on top of the pas- senger compartment! "This is only the fourth race I've been in this car," Taylor said gazing at the crumpled doors and quarter panels as her brother makes sure the left front tire isn't rubbing against a mangled bumper. "It was perfectly straight at the beginning!" "You want to save the car, especially toward the end," Taylor said. "I always tell myself I don't want to hit any body because I want to save the car, but then I'm next to somebody and I try to pass them even though it's not really a race." Taylor said in the last enduro she bumped into the back of a truck in a corner, causing a rollover. "I spun out the Number 99 truck," Taylor said. "He rolled over upside down, but he didn't get hurt. He never did try to get me back. I didn't mean to tip him over, it just happened. After that all the drivers teased me and said they were going to get me, but it was all in fun. I bumped into one car in the last race and later on he bumped me back." Taylor's only injury on the track came when a car in front of her hurled a clump of mud into her car. "I got hit in the eye with mud, and I had to go to the hospital," Taylor said. "I sat out the rest of the race in an ambulance, but they thought I should go to the hospital. They told me I scratched my eye." The promoter's view High Desert Speedway promoter Larry Jackson said he was a "little disappointed in the car count" for the Independence Day race. He said only 13 cars entered the enduro, compared with 18 for the previous outing. Jackson said Kirby Williams brought his strictly stock car out for an endure race last year, but this year all the cars are "just stock cars. I don't know of any with racing preparation." But Jackson said going fast is not the key to winning an endure. "Speed is good in an enduro," Jackson said, "But it's not the most important thing. The key to winnirig one of these is staying out of trouble and being steady." Jackson agreed with Taylor that the track was much faster for the Independence Day enduro. "We got the track too muddy for the June enduro," Jackson said. "We had too many cars getting stuck in the mud. So we made the track faster on purpose this time. We built it more like a race track and used the water truck." A little mud helps keep the driver's safe. "It's the speed that gets- people hurt," Jackson said. "We try to keep the track pretty slick because we don't want anybody to get hurt. We haven't had a serious injury since 1993, not even a broken bone. We've twice flown drivers to Reno as a precaution. One had a slight concussion and the other had a bruised lung and ribs. We've got a letter from our insurance company that says we're in the top three per- cent of the safest race tracks in the United States. We're pretty proud of our safety record."
