When Gloria Foster's son
attended and graduated from
Lassen Union High School
District's Diploma Gold
Adult School, she was so im-
pressed with the program
that she started volunteering
her time in the classroom.
Alternative Education
Principal Brett Mitchell and
Diploma Gold teacher Amy
Owens recognized Foster's ef-
forts and presented her with
a plaque during a Tuesday,
June 8 meeting of the Lassen
Union High School District
Board of Trustees.
Foster has volunteered at
the adult school for five
years; her son graduated in
2005.
Owens said she met Foster
through adult schoolteacher
Rich Egelhofer who had con-
nected with Foster's son and
helped him get through
school.
Egelhofer retired in 2008
and Owens said, "Now I'm
the beneficiary of Gloria and
all her good work,"
Owens said Foster knows
all the students names and at-
tends graduation every year.
In addition to volunteering
at Diploma Gold, Owens said
Foster works many jobs.
"She's the kind of person
in the community that makes
you happy you live in the
community," Owens said of
Foster.
Mitchell said the result of
her hard work is the result of
students getting their diplo-
mas.
Foster said, "I just think
it's a very worthwhile pro-
gram. I grade all these papers
and then I get to see them
graduate."
By correcting papers, Fos-
ter said some things have
changed since she was in
high school.
She said she did not enjoy
history, but now she enjoys
reading and grading the pa-
pers students write about the
subject.
