Lassen County TimeshNestwood PinePress . Tuesday, May 1,2007 7C- e e By Patrick Shillito Staff Writer pshillito@lassennews.com When owner of the Sierra Auction Service and Trailer Sales, Jim McEachern, walked out to a black truck trailer stored near the entrance to his business on Johnstonville Road on the morning of Monday, April 23, he was greeted with abig sur- prise. Someone apparently left a litter of puppies and kittens in the trailer. The mother cat was with the litters, taking care of both her kittens and the puppies. "I guess somebody who's been (in Our store) before fig- ured we'd be a good place .to leave them all," said McEachern. "We have a cou- ple of dogs and a couple of cats that stay with us in the store, and someone must have remembered, thinking we would be kind to the ani- mals." A customer left the trailer with the company to be repaired, McEachern said. The customer had no idea his trailer would become an unof- ficial animal shelter. McEachern said he was bringing the trailer in from the road when he heard an odd noise. When he looked back into the trailer, he found the baby animals. He said they were in good shape, considering they were left in an all black metal truck trailer near the side of the road. McEachern and his wife Carol made a make shift home out of the trailer for the cats and dogs, leaving them food and water. A large piece of, cardboard served to keep them in the shade. The maximum penalty for abandoning pets in the state of California is $1000 per ani- mal, along with possible jail time. McEachern has been able to give some of the animals away to good homes since last Monday, he said. The other animals have found a tempo- rary home in the care of McEachern and his wife Carol. "It's a shame that someone would just abandon them like that," Carol McEachern said. "We'll look after them for now. We don't want to take them to the pound. We'd hate to see them destroyed." The McEacherns said this was the first time somebody has left animals out in front of their business. Animal abandonment has been a serious issue in the U.S for years. According to statis- tics from the Progressive Animal Welfare Society, between 8-10 million cats and dogs wind up in shelters every year. If you would like to learn more about the puppies and kittens, you can call the McEacherns at 257-2598, or you can visit them and the animals at the Sierra Auction Service and Trailer Sales.
